What is success?
What is success?
In my previous post “what is my career”, I have mentioned that success is defined
differently by everyone (at least the ones who follow themselves). But we are
now wondering what is success to us. This isn’t an easy question and may take
time to realize what it’s for an individual. Here are some tips that you can
use to find out what is your success.
1. What is your Utopia?
I bet many of us have at least
encountered people dreaming for a better world or even better, we ourselves
have dreamt about it. But it’s not necessary to get a full picture
for the first time. It’s after a long time till we realize it with all its
details. We must know that all of us are special in our own way and it’ll be
great advantage thinking positively towards the society. Failing to appreciate
the latter however will make us more likely to define success only in our terms
which is not good.
2. Think in what way you can make a
difference.
All of us are able to make a
difference. These words bear a huge meaning and it’ll be best if we explain
this in an example:
It’s New Year’s Eve. Beautiful isn’t
it. Everyone is waiting for the New Year and the mood in the air feels good.
Well that’s for most of us. Say we are walking on a street till we see a man that
has lost everything wearing ragged clothes and seems heartbroken. To him the
holiday is nothing perhaps may go to beg around for pennies which he was doing
all the year hmm, may be with a better luck this time. And then we notice that
we are carrying full clothes as a present for our rich brother, who has asked
us to come to his party. We can now decide on two things.
No-1: leave the man as he is and give
the present to our brother which he probably won’t wear.
No-2: go to the man and give the
present as a New Year’s gift.
Now I know that most of us will
choose No-2 while reading this because I’ve inclined this story so much to make
No-2 more humane act. But frankly, how many of us will be willing to do it in
real life? That question is for each of us. Even after choosing No-2 we will
still have two main outcomes.
No-1, The man will probably make fun of us
or insult us also taking the clothes.
No-2, The man will be thrilled by our
decision and may stop believing that everyone is evil and he’s not alone.
The second outcome will be cool if possible but preparing for the first outcome
will make us relatively emotional stable. But we have missed a bigger point, we
have made a DIFFERENCE.
We should realize that this is
only one scene I made up and we could encounter totally d/t situations but you’ll
know what to do when the time comes.
3. Find something that gives you joy and
is useful
Sometimes things we do unconsciously can be useful or harmful. For example
I always put the chair back to its place whether it’s at the library or the
dining room. This is a clearly useful means of keeping things organized. Other simple
things we do that has an effect is throwing junk whether its food package or a
tissue paper. Developing this and other similar awareness will give us satisfaction
but it will be incomplete as long as we and a few others are practicing them.
4. Spreading our ideas to the mass
society
This is actually the toughest of all my tips but not impossible. This tip fulfills the drawback I mentioned earlier and is very important if we are to pass our ideas to others. Some of you may be asking me “what is so hard about it?” It’s because it doesn’t have a general step by step way to do it for everyone. But one law does work for all. It’s what I call the “law of listening”. Even listening to someone you may think is totally mad may bear something useful. Therefore what I can tell you is understand the person or people you are talking to and try to explain your idea in a way they can understand and if possible by making our approach as attractive as possible.
Will appreciate any comment or idea and will be replying and question
that might come to you.
Thanks for reading J
