Should I live like others?
Should I live like others?
- What is living like others? Is it good or bad? Well it depends. It depends on what situations you should copy others. For example wearing clothes is the norm done in almost all countries and is a must in many. But is wearing fashion designers cloth a must? Not really.- Human beings are social animals which mean we need each other to live like bees and ants. Some people separate out of the society and shut themselves from the outside world, from both good and bad. I bet you that you aren’t that kind of person (because if you are, you are reading some stuff written by someone else!). So all reading this post are social right? Good, let’s continue.
- Living like others is necessary at times like the examples mentioned above. But the world is too complicated to go with that fashion. Therefore I ask myself these questions to decide
- What is it?
- Is it useful /harmful?
- Does it have any social impact towards me
What is it?
Did you check out “y”s tattoo, and how about “z”s dress, oh! oh! and I totally forgot to tell you that “a” had a crush on “b” for over a year!Let’s be frank, do we have a friend like this or not? I’m pretty sure many of us do.
By having friends like these, it’s easy to be fooled to change our ideas. I’m not saying we should avoid all people that talk about others because they can be positive and inform us in a good way about the behavior of others. This is fine, as some may talk about people in a moderate way. But some may talk about people in negative terms all the time. These people are blinded by hatred and we need to help them to get rid of these habit because they can’t manage to get rid of this alone. The same applies to objects or services of any sort. We can visualize them by listening to different people with different views. The key to succeed is to see from different angles on the same thing.
Is it useful /harmful?
So we know about this person or object. Is it useful or hazardous? What do I get for what I give? Is it worth it? These questions help us to decide about whatever decision were planning to make. Just because someone else is doing it doesn’t mean you should do it too. But things aren’t always this easy. Now let’s say that you have a crush on someone you see every day and notice that he/she is wearing a special garment that no one else wears. “Great!” you may think, “we’ll be a duo and he/she will definitely like me”. After looking for that cloth you find out that it costs you dearly for your budget. Should you then buy it?OK, now let’s try to see it from different perspectives. Suppose you buy it, there might be a chance that the person may divert his/her attention towards you. I’m not some love expert but I do know you shouldn’t try to attract the attention of somebody you like by objects or a negative behavioral change. Besides there may be a greater chance of them rejecting you thinking that you’re competing with them. It’s not worth trying.
Does it have any social impact toward me?
This rather focuses on your relationship with the society. It can be either behavioural change or material goods. Let’s see an example for each.[1] You are at some cafeteria and you notice that some guys using slang words attract the attention of the ladies there. Trying to switch to a different person may seem an easy job to get the attention there. But it’s clear that your relationships are going to change too. If you have friends and family member that adore you it would be an obviously a fatal choice. But let’s see it from the other angle. If you were a person who always followed the trend or just do whatever others you label “cool” do and you lived your life being stressed out by your own actions, it might be time to watch others and behave more elegantly. (I repeat copying others is not always bad.)
[2] There is someone at the workplace having an expensive car and always try to impress your friends (you even) with his possessions. Would you be an easy prey for him or be an independent person.
It’s your choice but remember what do the values and norms of the society are telling you? What is your inner voice telling you? Are you defying them?
Have any questions or comments, feel free to ask and comment. And remember, you are the only one who can decide on your present and future.
