How is the modern age changing us? (Part 1)

Introduction

As the subject concerning the “modern age” is one of the main aspects of the blog, I hope readers may be interested in a post regarding this topic. So I’d like to write a few continuous posts that are focused on this point.

1.    Health.

Has the health of people improved through the years? Short answers, yes. People are indeed enjoying higher life expectancy. According to the statistics, people are living longer. But what exactly brought this change? It’s an easy question. Throughout the past centuries, our knowledge regarding diseases and medicine has increased remarkably along others. This has led to the production of better medicines and led people to devise quality surgical methods.

It’s no wonder we humans on average have better health status than our ancestors with all this security against diseases. But interestingly enough, rare and even new diseases are becoming seriously common. In my opinion, I believe the modern age has done more good than harm to improve our health by providing us knowledge to keep ourselves in a good condition for a long time.

Sadly though we seem to use our knowledge improperly and are arising an even more dangerous situation for us to live. Our “way of life” seems to be the main cause of the previously mentioned diseases. They are generally known as “Human induced Diseases.” I’ll be talking about how our “way of life” is d/t than those of the past in another post because it’s a broad topic but since they are related, let’s mention them a bit. We’re having more material comfort today than ever before. It’s also setting our community apart due to the priority of self therefore Greed.

All these add up to make us least mobile which brings us disease! Wait how on earth? Here’s how it works. Our bodies were designed so that we can hunt and gather. We’re expected by our body to be active. People in the past had to sweat a lot to eat. But our mind knows that these days you can get a thing called “Money” by working with little or no physical motion and that this money can buy everything needed for life and even more – luxury.

Due to this reasons, our body isn’t doing what it’s supposed to do. This disagreement leads to a range of diseases from high level cholesterol to serious cancers.

Another point we need to mention is how our diet has changed over the years. Processed foods have now taken a large percentage of food intake of an average person. Processed foods are wanted to have a long shelf life (therefore a big gap b/n manufacturing date and expiry date). In other words the food isn’t wanted to spoil fast. But in nature food has a very short shelf life so preservatives are added to make the food more resistant to spoilage. These preservatives have been used throughout the centuries; salt and vinegar being best known. These preservatives are natural and have no hazard to human health.

But nowadays tougher chemicals are now being used to preserve food for an even a longer time. One common preservative sodium nitrate (NaNO3) has been associated with bowel cancer. There is a never ending list of preservatives with potential risks to the body health. And all this is due to the fact that we neglect what nature offers to us.

Stopping all of these may seem impossible. But we usually forget that small things add up to have a bigger impact. I can’t write all the hazard that exist in our world but I hope this post can serve you as a notice or maybe even a wake up call.

If you have any comment, question or advice I will be more than glad to reply.
